This does, of course, raise another question; how has Sherlock Holmes become famous, when Watson has yet to begin writing his stories? Early on in Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s younger sister reflects on some newspaper clippings she’s collected of his success stories. The images are subtle and clever Easter eggs, because they’re tied to the Jack the Ripper killings in real history. This is actually a little anachronous — in real life the Ripper didn’t begin to kill prostitutes in the East End until 1888 — but it clearly implies Sherlock began his career by taking down Jack the Ripper in this fictional reality. Amusingly, in the real world, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself investigated Jack the Ripper, alongside his mentor Dr. Bell — the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. They reportedly both came to a conclusion, writing down the same name, and passed it on to Scotland Yard; the killings stopped shortly after, leading many to believe they’d uncovered a scandal of some kind.

As the oldest male in the family, Mycroft Holmes initially assumed responsibility for Enola when their mother went missing. Unfortunately, the relationship between Mycroft and Enola was strained, to say the least, because he attempted to force her to conform to his own idea of what a lady should be like. By the end of Enola Holmes, Mycroft had grown far too frustrated trying to keep his little sister under control, and he agreed to allow Sherlock to take his place. Sherlock never had the opportunity to tell Enola, though; she turned up to their meeting surreptitiously, and they didn’t talk to one another. Hopefully it won’t be long before Enola learns the truth about her new status quo.

Enola Holmes’ portrayal of Mycroft is quite unusual because he is portrayed as being the intellectual lesser of the three siblings, with Sherlock even suggesting he is envious of their intelligence — which led to both Sherlock and Enola having a stronger bond with their mother. It’s a nice touch, adding an element of sibling rivalry to the Holmes family, but it sits rather oddly with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. There, Mycroft was presented as just as brilliant as Holmes, although he preferred to operate in political circles. By 1895’s “The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans,” Mycroft had become one of the most important civil servants in Britain. “Mycroft draws four hundred and fifty pounds a year,” Sherlock told Watson, “remains a subordinate, has no ambitions of any kind, will receive neither honour nor title, but remains the most indispensable man in the country.” It’s difficult to see how the Mycroft Holmes of Enola Holmes could rise to such a prestigious position.

A new film about streetball legend Jackie Ryan will be available soon, and the trailer has been released. Entertainment Tonight obtained the trailer for Blackjack: The Jackie Ryan Story, and Greg Finley plays the title character. The film also stars Ashley Greene David Arquette and Michael Rapaport. The trailer can be seen here.

Blackjack: The Jackie Ryan Story is directed by Danny A. Abeckaser, who previously directed the film Mob Town. “We had to cast actors that could not only act and portray these biographical roles, but also actors who could play basketball,” Abeckaser said to ET. “This was important to me as the director in order to be able to shoot this film accurately to tell the story of Jackie Ryan the way I wanted to tell it.”
